This was of course, the first time since the late 1960s that two Ivatts tanks have worked a train together. This happened in January 2008 during the KWVR’s winter steam gala. The pair can be seen passing the top field near Haworth. Although both locos are virtually identical, the way they entered preservation couldn’t be any more different. Both engines are members of the Ivatt 2-6-2 class built at Crewe works and designed for branch line work, with the emphasis on ease of maintenance and serving. They were practically identical to the earlier Class 2 2-6-0s with only the addition of side tanks and bunkers. 41241 was built in 1949 while No.41312 was built in 1952. Unlike No.41241, which was saved for preservation by the KWVR soon after being withdrawn from traffic in 1967, No.41312 wasn’t so lucky. After being declared surplus to requirements in 1967, No.41312 was withdrawn from traffic at Nine Elms shed and sold off as scrap. She was towed dead along with a number of other withdrawn steam locomotives to Barry Scrap yard in North Wales in preparation to be broken up. Fortunately this did not happen and in August 1974 No.41312 was acquired by the Caerphilly Railway society. This Standard 4 type of locomotive was first introduced in 1952 and soon proved to be very good “modern” locomotives with an exception route availability. This particular example was built in the former Lancashire and Yorkshire works at Horwich in February 1952 and was first employed on the former London and midland region at Sutton Oak Shed near St Helens. Here she found work on freight duties in and around the Liverpool area, mainly hauling sand trains from Pilkington’s glass works near St Helens. However it was not unknown for No.76079 to be found on the St Helens to Chester via Warrington passenger service. In 1965, No.76079 was transferred to Springs branch shed near Wigan where she was employed on general mineral and goods traffic. After only 6 months at Springs branch, No.76079 was withdrawn from traffic and sold off as scrap. However, this was not to be the end for No.76079 as in 1974 she was saved from the cutters torch and restored to full working order. No.9017 was actually constructed using the frames of 1906 built “Bulldog class” No.3425 along with the boiler of 1899 built “Duke class” No.3282 “Chepstow Castle”. Strangely enough, this hybrid combination ideally suited the light passenger workings over the Cambrian Lines, as the resulting locomotive had sufficient power to haul 6 carriages unassisted over Talerddig, while being light enough to cross Barmouth Viaduct. A small number of the class carried the names of Earls, but these were soon removed after the Earls in question indicated to the GWR that, they would prefer their names to be used on something a little more prestigious, and so these names were transferred to the all new “Castle” class locomotives. No.9017 was one of the class never to carry a name in GWR / BR days and only received her allocated name in preservation. After many years working trains over the Cambrian coast, No.9017 was withdrawn from Machynlleth (89C) in October 1960 and put into store at Oswentry works. Here she would remain until 14th February 1962 when she would be purchased for preservation and moved to the Bluebell Railway, Sussex. Built in 1898, this station was sanctioned by the Duke of Westminster who it is thought lived close by. This station use to be a grand affair complete with stylish brick buildings on each platform, very decorative brickwork on the chimneys and spacious canopies to provide shelter for waiting passengers. It is thought that because many of the Dukes important guest's arrived at this station, it needed to make a good and lasting impression. Despite all its grandness, the station was situated in a poorly populated rural area and finally closed to passengers in June 1959. Today, only the station building on the Crewe bound line remains. After spending 6 years rusting away in the now famous “Barry Scrap yard”, No.76079 was initially moved to a site in Liverpool where restoration to full working order began. In the early 90s, restoration was final completed and No.76079 made a successful return to steam on the Llangollen Railway. Since then No.76079 has visited a number of Railways including, The North Yorkshire Moors Railway and the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. Built for the LNER in 1937, No.4498 was outshopped as the 100th Pacific to be built under Sir Nigel Gresley. It was only fitting that this new locomotive would carry the name of her famous designer. On April 23rd 1944, No.4498 was moved to Grantham Shed after being based at Kings Cross 'Top Shed' from new. Now renumbered as BR No.60007, “Sir Nigel Gresley” achieved the post-war steam record speed of 112mph on May 23rd 1959. After 6 years at Grantham. No.60007 returned to “Top shed” and remained there until closure in 1963. During No.60007s 29 year career for the LNER and BR, she received no less than 12 boilers and two tenders. After completing 1.8 million miles of revenue service, No.60007 was withdrawn from Aberdeen shed on the 1st February 1966 surplus to requirements. Fortunately, No.60007 was saved from the cutters torch by the A4 Locomotive Society and moved to the former LMS Locomotive works at Crewe for refurbishment. It is here (some believe) she received, among other things, the 3 sets of 6 ft 8 inch driving wheels from former class mate No.60026 “Miles Beevor”. These wheelsets were believed to be in far better condition than those beneath No.60007 and so an exchange was made. The remains of No.60026 was then cut up as scrap at Crewe works. Today No.60007 can normally be found on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway carrying her 1950-1952 Livery of BR Experimental blue. She can also been seen steaming up and down the national network hauling special railtours such as this one.
